Although it may be hard to believe for those of us who are living in
Scotland, water is nevertheless a valuable and increasingly scarce commodity for
millions of people throughout the world and it is important that we can make a
contribution in minimising waste. For this reason, almost all of the 48 toilets
in the school have been fitted with a 'hippo' which means that between 2 and 3
litres of water is saved with every flush! A project for next term is to
evaluate how much water we save during the course of a whole year! Do you know
how many times you flush the toilet each day!?

Hippo the Water Saver
- saves water each time you flush!
Water also plays an important
role within the garden where lots of vegetables and flowers are grown. Many are
grown from seed and are brought on within the greenhouse and need daily
watering. A small water tub collects rainwater for the plants but this is often insufficient
for all of the gardening needs. A project within the next 2 years will be to
look at ways of utilising 'brown water' which can be captured from the roofs of
existing buildings. Watch this space!
